    Passage 1
I don’t often lose things and I’m especially careful with money, so I was quite surprised when I reached for my wallet and found it wasn’t there. At first, I thought I might have left it at home. Then I remembered taking it out to pay for the taxi, so I knew I had it with me just before I walked into the restaurant. I wondered if it had slipped (滑) out of my pocket while I was eating dinner. Thinking about that possibility, I turned and walked back to the table where I had been sitting. Unfortunately, there were several people sitting at the table at the time, so I called a waiter and explained to him that my wallet had fallen out of my pocket while I was sitting at the table a few minutes earlier. I had the waiter go over to the table to see if my wallet was on the floor. While the waiter was looking for it, the manager of the restaurant came up to me and asked me if anything was wrong. I didn’t want to get a lot of people involved in it, but I knew I had to get the wallet back. I told the manger what had happened. He asked me to describe the wallet to him, and then he insisted that I report the missing wallet to the police. I told him that I didn’t particularly want to get the police involved in it; besides, I was in a hurry as I had an appointment with my doctor in just a few minutes. I explained to him that my biggest worry at the moment was how I was going to pay the bill. He told me not to worry about that. He had me write down my name and address, and he said he would send me a bill.

    Passage 2
Crime has its own cycles (周期), a magazine reported some years ago. Police records that were studied for five years from over 2,400 cities and towns show a surprising link between changes in the season and crime patterns.
The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do rape and other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: it is a weekend crime. It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 pm and 6 am.
Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, burglary has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 pm and 2 am on a Saturday night in December, January or February. Which is the most uncriminal month of all? May—though more dog bites are reported in this month than any other month of the year.
Possibly, high temperature and humidity (濕度) bring on our strange and terrifying summer actions, but police officials are not sure. “There is, of course, no proof of a connection between humidity and murder,” they say. “Why murder’s high time should come in the summertime we really don’t know.”
36.A connection has been found( ).

    A. in winter B. in summer
    C. at night D. on weekends
39.What is the strange thing in May?( )

    B. Most criminals are caught in May.
    C. There are more dog bites in May.
    D. Most criminals are released in May.
40.One conclusion you can draw from the last paragraph is that( ).
    A. there may be a link between murder and hot weather
